Tummy Tuck

An Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is a procedure that tightens the loose or protruding abdominal skin after weight loss or pregnancy. Weight gain and pregnancy can stretch and weaken the abdominal skin and muscles, which reduces elasticity. When elasticity is reduced, this area is less responsive to diet and exercise. Dr. Novia will take into account your health history and work with you to decide whether or not this procedure is for you.

Health Screening Before Surgery

Before your tummy tuck, we conduct a thorough review of your medical history and health screening. Patients with chronic health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease are more likely to have complications.

Considerations, Medications and Preparation Prior to Surgery

Results are best for patients who have met their goal weight or are close to it. Women who are considering pregnancy are advised to postpone a tummy tuck. Antibiotics will be prescribed before your surgery to prevent infection. Additionally, Dr. Novia will require that you discontinue the use of drugs that contain aspirin to prevent excess bleeding. Patients are required to wash with antiseptic soap for three or more days before surgery.

Tummy Tuck Surgery

Tummy tuck surgery is not a replacement for weight loss; the primary goal of this surgery is to remove fat and excess skin while contouring the abdomen for a flat appearance. Surgery will take two to five hours; your release may be within hours, and in some cases, it may require hospitalization. Hospitalization will be determined before surgery based on the procedure’s complexity and your health condition.

The first incision is made in a “U” shape that extends from beneath one hipbone to the other. An additional incision is made around the navel. The skin is then separated from the hipbone to expose loose tissue that conceals the abdominal muscles. Excess fat is removed, and weakened muscles are sutured together before the skin is stretched over the abdomen and reconstructed. Drains are inserted to prevent excess fluid buildup during the healing process.

Recovery and Outcome

You may experience some swelling and discomfort in the first days after surgery. Pain medications will be prescribed to alleviate soreness. In the five to seven days before your stitches are removed, you will have to change your dressings and take special care when bathing. Dr. Novia and his staff will explain how to handle hygiene after surgery. You may also wear a support garment after surgery.

Scarring is expected with this type of surgery; scars will become lighter in time. Depending on your occupation, you will want to schedule two to four weeks off work to recover. In general, tummy tucks are most successful for those who continue to eat a healthy diet and maintain a consistent exercise program after surgery.
