Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that uses implants to increase breast size and volume. A safe procedure, breast augmentation has positive results, including a renewed sense of self-confidence. Your consult with Dr. Novia will help you determine what size, shape and approach are best for you.
Why Women Choose Augmentation
Women have a variety of reasons for seeking breast augmentation that goes beyond increasing natural breast size:
- Volume Loss After Pregnancy, Nursing or Weight Reduction
- Balance Correction for Women with Inconsistent Breast Size
- Following a Mastectomy or Lumpectomy
Augmentation is an individual choice with many options for you to look and feel your best.
Your Size and Shape
When considering size and shape, choosing the right combination includes several factors:
- Breast width
- Balance with hips and natural curves
- Shape: round (higher arc at the top of the breast) or teardrop (more natural look with a gentle slope)
- Breast tissue in relationship to the size of your implant
Your lifestyle is also a point of consideration, e.g., if you are athletic, larger breasts may impede sports and exercise. Breast implants are measured in cubic centimeters (CCs) rather than cup size. The lack of breast tissue can cause implant edges to show and create additional risks if the implant volume is too large. Working with Dr. Novia, you will decide the amount of volume and shape that complements your frame and lifestyle.
Surgery, Incisions and Placement
Breast augmentation is an outpatient surgery performed under general anesthesia. Incisions are made in one of three areas:
- Beneath the Breast
- Under the Arm
- Around the Nipple
Implants are placed beneath the breast tissue or above the muscle. Those placed above the muscle have a more natural look and yield more reliable mammography results.
What to Expect After Surgery
A friend or family member will be required to take you home after surgery and stay with you for the first 24 hours. After that, Dr. Novia will prescribe medication to control pain. Tightness in the breast area is normal and results from the body’s attempt to adapt to your implants.
All augmentation patients are advised to wear a bra for the first two weeks after surgery. Resuming normal activities such as free movement, walking, or low-impact exercise can be expected in the first week. You may return to work within a few days of your surgery but must avoid heavy lifting and high-impact exercise for four weeks.
